Prydwyn Quickthorn
Quickthorn
A train left Happy Valley Pond one day at sunset, heading 3/5 of a mile every ten seconds towards the Gates of Dawn. The question to be answered was, when would it arrive at its ever-changing destination, suitably crewed and prepared to pronounce its first utterance?
With its vocal harmoniscapes, lysergine wordscapes, and often acoustic (when not archaically electric) soundscapes, Quickthorn is the long-gestated dreamchild of composer, arranger, and instrumentalist Ysbyddaden Bedwawd. Incorporating the efforts of various like-spirited collaborators (including the itinerant ‘wyrdieval’ consort Koivuläänistä), Quickthorn has begun of late to wake at last into recorded being.
Also in the idea’s net, with a connection stretching back to the opening years of this century, is vocalist and grizzled psych-folk veteran all-rounder Prydwyn (an erstwhile solo artist and member of Stone Breath, Green Crown, and The Spectral Light & Moonshine Firefly Snakeoil Jamboree, who has performed and recorded as well with Tom Rapp of legendary 60s/70s group Pearls Before Swine). Inspired largely by his intensifying involvement with Quickthorn, and with the ever-unfolding musical projects of Timothy Renner, Prydwyn emerged from a three-year live performance ‘retirement’ in 2006 to perform a short set at the very first Moseley Folk Festival.
“It’s almost medieval in its otherworldly folky style, and at a time when bands like Circulus and Espers are making their presence felt, there’s no better time for Prydwyn to return to action. The times are not it seems, as Bob Dylan said, a changing. At least not in Quickthorn’s world.” (Oxford Nightshift, December 2006)
